I came to Montreal from Medellín in 2022 for a master's in environmental science at McGill, and I am now in the third year of my PhD. I have had moments of real joy and moments where I nearly went home. Here is what international student life in Canada has been like for me.
Money
This is the first thing everyone asks. My master's tuition as an international student was around 24,000 Canadian dollars a year. I had a partial scholarship from my department and a research assistantship, and my parents helped in the first year. For the PhD, I receive a funding package of about 28,000 dollars a year which covers tuition and gives me a small stipend.
My monthly costs in Montreal:
- Room in a shared apartment in Mile End: 750 dollars (now 850)
- Groceries: 300 to 350 dollars
- Monthly transit pass with student discount: around 60 dollars
