Finding a room in Toronto on a caregiver's salary

When I came to Toronto as a home support worker, I lived with my employer's family for the first year. It was convenient and saved money, but I wanted my own space and more privacy. Last spring I started looking for a room. Here is what I learned.
My budget
I earn around 19 dollars an hour, working about 40 hours a week. After tax, that is around 2,600 dollars a month. I send 500 dollars home to my children in Iloilo and I am saving for their future move. So my limit for rent was 1,000 dollars, including utilities.
What 1,000 dollars gets you
Not much, honestly. I looked at 14 rooms in six weeks:
- A room in a basement in Scarborough for 850 dollars, but the only window was very small and there was a strong smell of damp
- A shared room (two beds) near Bathurst for 650 dollars. I said no, as I wanted privacy
- A room in a house with five other tenants near Jane and Finch for 950 dollars, with one bathroom for all six people
