Two years ago, I arrived in Singapore with two suitcases and a job at an audit firm. Now I have a routine, a small circle of good friends and many opinions. Here is my honest review of life in the Lion City.
The good
Safety. I grew up in Johannesburg, where you are always aware of your surroundings. In Singapore, I walk home at 2am without thinking about it. This changed my life more than I expected.
Food. Hawker centres are a national treasure. For 5 dollars, I eat chicken rice, laksa or char kway teow of a quality that restaurants elsewhere would charge 25 dollars for. My favourite is Maxwell Food Centre, but every neighbourhood has one.
Efficiency. Government services work online. Transport works. My employer and landlord are organised. I have not stood in a queue at a government office once.
Travel. Changi Airport is a hub for all of Asia. I have been to Bali, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Hanoi, Tokyo and Seoul on weekends or long weekends.
Diversity.
