Rated 2 out of 5
I moved to Lisbon from Belo Horizonte in 2022. Finding a long-term rental was the most stressful part of the move, and it has not become easier. This is what happened, and why I rate the experience a 2 out of 5 even though I now love my apartment.
My situation
I work as a freelance product designer for clients in Brazil and the US. My income is stable, around 3,800 euros a month net, but I do not have a Portuguese employment contract. That turned out to be a problem.
The market
Lisbon rents have risen dramatically since 2015. In 2022, a one bedroom apartment in central neighbourhoods like Arroios, Anjos or Campo de Ourique cost 1,100 to 1,400 euros. Today it is more. Many apartments are converted into short-term rentals for tourists, which reduces supply for residents.
What landlords asked for
For each apartment I applied to, the landlord or agency wanted some combination of:
- A Portuguese NIF (tax number)
