In January 2024, my husband Tom, our two children (then 7 and 10) and I moved from Bristol to Melbourne. I am a physiotherapist, and physiotherapy is on Australia's skilled occupation lists. This is how we did it, what it cost and how we feel now.
The visa
We applied for a Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), which gives permanent residence from day one. The process:
- 01Skills assessment with the Australian Physiotherapy Council. As a UK-trained physio I followed the standard pathway. It took about four months.
- 02English test. Even as a native speaker I needed a test to claim maximum points. I took the PTE and scored "superior".
- 03Expression of interest in SkillSelect. My points were 85, including age, English, experience and qualifications.
