German healthcare is excellent once you are inside the system. Getting inside, especially as someone who does not speak German fluently, is harder than it should be. Here is my experience of finding a GP and a specialist in Berlin.
Health insurance first
As an employee earning under the threshold for private insurance, I joined a statutory health insurance fund (Krankenkasse), TK in my case, in my first week. My employer registered me, and I received my insurance card (Gesundheitskarte) by post three weeks later. The contribution is deducted from my salary automatically, around 8 percent from me and a similar amount from my employer.
Finding a GP (Hausarzt)
In Germany you can choose any doctor who accepts statutory patients, but many GP practices in Berlin are full and not accepting new patients. I called seven practices near my home in Wedding. Four did not answer, two were full and one had a waiting list.
